Wish Kid Surrounded by Sharks at National Aquarium

Shark Enthusiast Gets an Up Close View

ORVILLE, OhIo (October 2020): Even though Presley was an active toddler, she remained still and fully captivated by the sharks in the massive viewing tank. It was an impromptu trip to an aquarium after a difficult doctor appointment that sparked Presley’s love of sharks. Since then, she “eats, breathes, and sleeps sharks,” said her mom Nikki. She even has a shark-themed bedroom. “They’re my favorite animal in the whole wide world!” Presley excitedly shared. “One day I want to work with them.” Kids Wish Network, a children’s charity that grants wishes for kids with life-threatening illnesses, had a special surprise for this shark enthusiast. She had a private behind-the-scenes tour of the National Aquarium’s shark exhibit, without even leaving her home.

Presley’s personalized Zoom session was guided by Programs/Tour Specialist Andy Glass, and Shark Aquarist Lindsey Dimick. They took her on an exclusive catwalk suspended above the sharks for an amazing up close and personal perspective of several different species of sharks. “I loved seeing her face light up when the sharks swam by,” said her mom. “She was super excited.” Her tour also included various viewing areas, educational facts, and a question and answer session. Presley loved her virtual tour and wished she could visit the aquarium in person. There was another surprise! Kids Wish purchased Presley and her family generous gift cards for airfare and Hotels.com, so she could actually experience the aquarium. “I am above and beyond thankful for everything you guys have done for my daughter,” said her mom. “She is still going on and on about it!”

Health issues began surfacing right after Presley’s birth. She was having difficulty breathing, and a couple of years later had a grand mal seizure that she almost didn’t survive. Over the years, she’s struggled with epilepsy, and myotonic dystrophy, a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle loss and weakness. She continues her battle and the challenges of daily activities.

“Presley gets so excited when talking about sharks, and we’re so happy we could further nurture her admiration of these amazing creatures who spark her joy,” said her Wish Coordinator Kim Kreiner.

Many Thanks
