Young Hero Stays Positive During Difficult Treatments
Freya swallowed a button cell battery resulting in severe damage to her throat with an esophageal burn. She was hospitalized for two weeks, underwent multiple procedures and tests, and was unable to eat or drink for a long time. She coped as well as could be expected for a four-year-old, including learning to swallow unpleasant medication needed to coat her throat. Freya loves to play no matter what is going on. She came to the hospital playroom almost daily and loved building things, making projects from arts and crafts supplies, and playing games. She talked to everyone and was friendly despite everything going on medically. Freya also coped well with her mom being pregnant and accepted being with dad and grandma without any problems. She was nominated by her Child Life Specialist Patricia Penet at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio in Texas. Kids Wish Network is so happy to award Freya as a Hero of the Month.
