Port Byron, Illinois— Kids Wish Network recently announced that Peyton Sallows of Port Byron, Illinois, was their 2023 “Hero of the Year,” celebrating her extraordinary bravery and quick thinking during a critical emergency at home. 

Peyton’s mother, Alissa, experienced severe anaphylactic shock triggered by an adverse reaction to a new medication. Her condition rapidly deteriorated as her tongue, throat, and airway began to close. With no time to lose, Peyton demonstrated incredible courage and presence of mind by unlocking her mom's phone and calling her father, who was away for work. She then provided the arriving paramedics with critical information, including details of her mother’s recent shoulder surgery, which was vital for her treatment. 

“Peyton’s heroic actions go beyond her years, showing a level of poise and maturity that is truly exceptional,” said Tam Lai, Executive Director of Kids Wish Network. “Her ability to stay calm under such intense pressure in order to get her mom the help she needed is what makes Peyton our ‘Hero of the Year,’ and we could not be more proud to honor such a courageous and loving young girl!”

The Hero of the Year award is given each year to a child who has demonstrated bravery and selflessness in extraordinary circumstances. Through a detailed nomination and selection process, the organization identifies a young hero whose actions have significantly impacted others and demonstrated an inspiring spirit of courage. The recipient of this award is given a $3,000 prize as a way of celebrating their remarkable bravery in the face of adversity.
