Bedroom Makeover Furnishes Teen’s Happiness with Dream Spac

ELBURN, IL. (September 2024): Lillian loves watching DIY shows, and never imagined she’d get to experience her own Insta-worthy bedroom makeover like the ones on TV. Her family’s visit to The Home Depot in South Elgin seemed like any other, but it actually had a meaningful purpose with a big surprise waiting for Lillian. When she arrived at the paint department, there were pink and yellow balloons, a big cake, welcoming staff, and extended family and friends. Excitement was in the air. Lillian wondered what was going on. A manager revealed that Kids Wish Network and The Home Depot were teaming up to transform her bedroom into her dream space that Lillian would help to design! The Home Depot Foundation graciously provided the generous grant for Lillian’s wish. Walmart donated the festive cake to help celebrate.

It was so magical seeing the transformation unfold during each step of the process. When Lillian saw her newly designed room for the first time, her mouth gaped open and she literally jumped for joy. “She is beyond excited,” said her mom Kathleen. “You did such an amazing job. Thank you so much for making something so special and a true wish for her.“

Her bedroom is now her serene sanctuary with new paint, a queen size upholstered platform bedframe with storage and a tufted headboard, memory foam mattress, comforter, closet tower systems,  additional storage units, a mini fridge, a beautiful rug, LED lighting around her ceiling, and additional accessories. It’s the dreamiest space for Lillian to relax and hang out with her friends.

“It was something she truly wanted and had been asking for,” said her mom. “If she said she wanted something, Home Depot said, ‘alright let’s get it!’ There was no hesitation. And they truly got her closet to what she was envisioning. The wish made her feel loved and special.”

Lillian’s new bedroom is so appreciated after all the struggles of her diagnoses. It all began when testing revealed she had an anomalous origin of the right coronary artery, and she underwent open heart surgery. A few years later, she lost function in one of her feet that was progressing into her leg. She was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy, and underwent surgery for a spinal cord stimulator implant to help get movement back into her legs. She also continues to get infusions to help alleviate the burning sensations she feels from her neuropathy. Lillian has been through so much, additionally coping with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) which causes her to pass out. She takes 13 daily medications, and undergoes cardiac rehab. Lillian recently found out about new health challenges.
