3- Year- Old Perseveres and Defies the Odds
Steven was born prematurely at only 27 weeks. He spent the first six months of his life in the NICU, and disturbingly suffered severe brain bleeds that led to hydrocephalus. He wasn’t expected to survive. Steven had a shunt implanted to drain the excess fluid from his brain, and a G-Tube for nutrition. In addition to a hernia repair, he later struggled with complications and underwent abdominal surgery. He also endured seizures. Although faced with daunting health traumas, Steven’s determination helped him defy the odds. He receives physical, occupational, and speech therapies twice a week, and inspires his therapists with his motivation, dedication and kindness.“Steven is the hardest worker we know, he never gives up,” said his Speech-Language Pathologist Lori Kotlickyat Memorial Hospital West Fitness and Rehab in Pembroke Pines, Florida.“He is so deserving of this Hero nomination.” She along with other therapy staff Amy Zuluaga, Tina Milian, and Abigail Ramdhansingh nominated this brave 3-year-old. Kids Wish Network is honored to recognize Steven as a Hero.
Kids Wish Network has been making dreams come true for children since 1997. We are dedicated to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children experiencing life-altering situations. We started with the single purpose of granting wishes to children suffering from life-threatening conditions but have since created additional programs to benefit kids nationwide, including Hero of the Month, Project Toy Drop, Holiday of Hope Gift Banks, and A Child Forever Funeral Assistance.
