Initially Corbin’s doctor speculated that there was nothing to worry about, until his symptoms began to affect his hearing and sight. When the cancer was discovered it had already reached stage four. Megan is a bright teen who loves animals and enjoys horseback riding. She’s a great student and she particularly likes her science classes. Megan’s favorite music is by Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber and her favorite movies are from the “Twilight” series.

Before she turned four, Megan was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disease called cystinosis. This condition causes an amino acid called cystine to build up in the body. The cystine crystallizes and gathers in the kidneys, eyes, liver, muscles, pancreas, brain and white blood cells, causing kidney failure. Because of this condition, both of Megan’s kidneys were removed and she was placed on dialysis before undergoing a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, because of the aggressive nature of this disease, Megan may need another kidney transplant in the future. She currently takes medications every six hours and her condition is closely monitored.

When she was 13 years old, Taylor fainted and was taken to the hospital, where doctors tried to figure out what was the matter with her. After three and a half years, she was finally diagnosed with an extremely rare autosomal disease called Muckle-Wells syndrome that causes fevers, rashes, joint pains and hearing loss because the body’s immune system attacks itself. In addition, Taylor’s doctors discovered that she suffered from intestinal malrotation – where the intestines are shifted and rotated out of their normal positions in the abdomen – and intussusception of her lower intestines – where a section of one of her lower intestines prolapses into another. Taylor also suffers from dysmotility, a condition in which the small intestine’s ability to move digestive secretions and enzymes through the body is impaired or stopped altogether. Because of all her conditions, Taylor has already undergone 4 procedures and has no intestinal usage; she is completely dependent on IV nutrition, as her stomach no longer works. Taylor takes 10 medications a day, receives a shot every five days and she suffers frequent spinal pressure, headaches and fainting spells.

Her doctors immediately started her on 8 cycles of chemotherapy after surgically implanting a port. Jessica is on plenty of medications and must have a blood transfusion every two to three weeks.

When he suddenly began experiencing leg pain and several other symptoms, his mother took him to the doctors. During the diagnosis, the doctor stated the case was so serious that had they waited a day or two, Harold may have passed away. He was immediately put on chemotherapy treatments.

Kalie is a loving young girl who enjoys board games, volleyball, and her Nintendo Wii. At only 11 years old, her most admired hobbies include dancing, painting, and singing. Kalie is described by her family as having a beautiful and strong personality, and is intent on keeping a smile on her mother’s face.

At the age of ten Kalie began to encounter several eye problems, including loss of vision. Finally, after a brain biopsy, Kalie was diagnosed with Central Nervous System (CNS) Vasculitis. CNS Vasculitis is a disease in which the brain, spine and the areas around them become inflamed. Kalie now struggles with her balance, which makes it difficult to walk long distances. She is on a strict regimen of eight different medications and is frequently enduring doctor visits and blood testing.

Brianna was born with spina bifida, a condition that affects her spine. She also suffers from hydrocephalus – a buildup of fluid in the skull – and a curvature of the spine called scoliosis. Because of her conditions, Brianna has endured 15 surgeries in her life so far, including a 12-hour surgery and revisions to the shunt implanted in her skull to help drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid. Unfortunately, she will probably have to endure more as she gets older. Brianna is paralyzed from the waist down, wears a brace for her scoliosis and relies on a wheelchair for mobility.

Nikolai is a huge fan of Mickey Mouse. He also enjoys watching Disney/Pixar’s movie “Cars” and can recite the whole movie line for line! He is described by his family as being a very happy and energetic kid who simply loves to laugh and sing.

Nikolai was born 14 weeks early and, after one month, was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis. This disease resulted in the loss of 2/3 of Nikolai’s small intestine, which lead to short bowel syndrome and severe malnourishment issues. The secondary forms of nutrition that Nikolai needed for supplement, in time, have also caused cirrhosis of the liver. He has since been diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder. Nikolai was also recently diagnosed with having food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, which is a rare, severe food allergy that can delay food digestion and cause other serious problems such as vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. Additionally, Nikolai is prone to illness, suffers with lung issues, has an enlarged spleen, and must eat only formulated meals.
