Shelley Breiner is the founder of Kids Wish Network, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to infusing hope, creating long-lasting memories and improving the quality of life for children. Kids Wish Network grants a variety of wishes including sending kids and their families to theme parks, on cruises, on trips to meet their favorite celebrities, and just about anything in between.
Since Shelley Breiner founded Kids Wish Network in 1997, she and her wish-granting team have helped make wishes come true for thousands of children with life-threatening illnesses and have also provided unique programs to thousands more children who have faced challenging and difficult circumstances.
Shelley Breiner has been building successful businesses in the since the mid 1980s. Shelley ran several furniture businesses and decided to sell them after a life-changing event. She lost her father David in 1993 after a lengthy battle with cancer and she decided to focus on how she and her family would honor the memory of her father David Askin.
Shelley stated, “I’ve always wanted to help children and I was touched by the courageous spirits of the children we met at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center when my family and I would accompany my father for his treatments.”
After Shelley and her husband had investigated the possibilities of either supporting another charity or starting their own, and conducted extensive research, Shelley decided to start a charity for children battling life-threatening illnesses.
Shelley added, “My dream of honoring my father’s legacy while also helping the children came to fruition when the idea of starting a charity to improve the lives of kids like the ones we met at the hospital started to take shape.”
Shelley founded Kids Wish Network in 1997 and she began granting the first few wishes for the kids out of the kitchen in their home. The charity evolved as they opened their first official office in Oldsmar, FL and then Shelley began expanding programs and services to better serve the children and their families. Some of the programs she implemented were the Funeral assistance program to assist families coping with the loss of a child, “Holiday of Hope” events hosted at pediatric hospitals and “Hero of the Month” program implemented to recognize more children. In 2005 Shelley expanded and relocated the Kids Wish Network national headquarters to Holiday, FL to better position the charity for growth.
Shelley has been the executive director of Kids Wish Network for nearly 13 years and she and her family are proud they have made such an impact on the lives of thousands of children. Shelley said, “I look forward to seeing Kids Wish Network build upon the legacy we have created and continue to offer innovative programs and services to help many more children in the future.”
