“Allison tells everyone about her wish and about how special she felt”
Only a few hours after Allison was born, her parents discovered that she could not tolerate formula. Weeks later, doctors reported that she was suffering from severe reflux, necessitating an NG tube and diagnosed her with failure to thrive. At that point, she had already had four sets of tubes put in her ears, but the reflux was still eating away at her eardrum. Her doctors decided to perform a surgical procedure on the young girl to treat gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia surgery to tie off the upper portion of her stomach at the lower end of her esophagus.
When Allison was older, she had to have the same surgeries repeated when her doctors found that she had herniated since the last time they operated, causing her to experience agonizing pain and to lose a significant amount of weight. After continued stomach issues and countless tests, Allison was finally diagnosed with Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome, a digestive condition that occurs when the first part of the small intestine is compressed between two arteries (the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery). Allison is a brave and determined girl who adores reading, baking, and spending time with her big brother. Unfortunately, due to the nature of her lifelong illness, Allison has often had to forgo the activities she enjoys most. Her favorite pastimes include swimming in the ocean and collecting shells on the beach.
Kids Wish Network wanted to give Allison her dream and send her to the Florida Keys so she could swim in the breathtaking clear blue waters of the islands and do all sorts of amazing activities that are only found in that part of the world. Many generous donors and sponsors worked with Kids Wish Network to make Allison’s dream a reality.
During her wish, Allison and her family stayed at the beautiful and accommodating Ocean Reef Club. The Ocean Reef Club was so kind as to provide a few different aspects to Allison’s wish, including fun and sun at the Ocean Reef Club’s Buccaneer Island, delicious meals at the Ocean Reef Restaurant and the Ocean Reef Club’s Palm Court Restaurant, and even some time of pampering courtesy of The Spa at Ocean Reef.
Allison was also treated to several fun-filled activities including exploring the beauty at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, snorkeling in the beautiful underwater world while on the Fury Water Adventure, watching the impressive sea lion show at the Theater of the Sea, and exploring the odd and unusual at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Odditorium. The family was also provided wonderful meals courtesy of the charming Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe, the stunning Sundowners, and the innovative Atlantic Edge Restaurant.
Allison and her family felt so grateful for the wish and felt blessed about how much of a positive experience it was for their whole family. Allison’s mother, Kathleen stated, “We would never have been able to do this trip without Kids Wish Network’s help. Our family bond was made stronger by being able to not worry for five days.”
