Morgan’s Blood Sugar Struggle

Wish Kid Morgan - Kids Wish Network

“Her glucose levels were more than twice the norm”

When Morgan was two she displayed signs of discomfort while using the restroom. At the pediatrician’s, an initial blood sugar test was run, and Morgan’s results were somewhere between 450 and 500. This information alone was enough for her doctor to send Morgan and her family straight to the ER. Equipment there showed that her glucose level was a startling 600, three times the norm. The American Diabetes Association recommends that the age-specific blood sugar goal range for children under the age of six be between 100 to 180 before meals and 110 to 200 at bedtime. Morgan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin which is needed to allow sugar to enter cells to produce energy. Morgan was admitted to the hospital, where she was hooked up to an IV insulin drip, and doctors checked her blood sugar every two hours over the course of her four day stay until her levels were completely regulated. At home, Morgan would have to utilize insulin injections for treatment.

By the end of preschool, Morgan was placed on an insulin pump. Insulin pumps deliver rapid- or short-acting insulin 24 hours a day through a catheter placed under the skin. The benefits of Morgan using an insulin pump are that she can match her insulin to her lifestyle, rather than getting an insulin injection and matching her life to how the insulin is working. Recently, nine year old Morgan was upgraded to a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which enables her to monitor her glucose levels 24 hours a day through a sensor that connects to an insulin pump. The CGM will also give Morgan early warnings of lows and highs.

Morgan is a smart and spunky “fireball.” She relishes keeping everyone on their toes, and her family says that there is never a dull moment with her around. Morgan loves all of the Disney princesses, movies, and shows.
