“He now takes injections of a strong immune repressor while he waits on genome testing”
For Joshua, it all began a couple of years ago with severe stomach pains and not much of an appetite. His symptoms along with the results of his doctor’s ordered blood work landed Josh in the hospital for more tests. After 5 days on an IV of prednisone that initially seemed to help, Josh was released with a prescription that unfortunately over the course of a couple of month caused a bad reaction for him. Another hospital stay with the same IV of prednisone did not, however, have the favorable results experienced a few months earlier.
For the next several months, Josh was in the hospital being treated for severe inflammation of his esophagus and through his colon. He had to undergo six colonoscopies and endoscopies. He was transferred to and seen at four different hospitals while doctors tried to diagnose and then find the right medication for treatment. Josh now takes injections of a strong immune repressor while he waits on genome testing. He continues to suffer with a diagnosis of autoimmune enteropathy. Autoimmune enteropathy is a rare disorder characterized by severe and protracted diarrhea, weight loss from malabsorption and immune-mediated damage to the intestinal mucosa.
During all of this, his mother noticed a limp in Josh’s walk. An MRI showed vascular necrosis, death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply, in his right femur. Josh had to undergo core compression surgery where doctors drilled into his femur to let blood flow in and then took a piece from the bottom of his femur and attached it to the top of it. Joshua is now at high risk for a complete hip replacement in the future.
Josh is an easy going teen who enjoys playing video games. He’s a fan of satirical comedy and politics and particularly loves watching Stephen Colbert and Jon Oliver. Josh spends a lot of his downtime thinking of inventions that will help to advance medicine and dreams of going into the bio-medical field.
