Daleny’s mother noticed that her teenage daughter looked very pale and had been complaining of her head hurting. Blood work done at the doctors showed a high white blood count. Additional testing revealed the devastating diagnosis of acute leukemia.
Acute lymphocytic leukemia is a blood cancer that results when abnormal white blood cells accumulate in the bone marrow. The leukemia invades the blood and can spread throughout the body to other organs, such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. It is an acute type of leukemia, which means it can progress quickly. Without treatment, it can be fatal within a few months.
Daleny is as very social young lady who was sad to have to be homeschooled while she received chemotherapy for a year. For now, she is considered in remission and is excited to return to school. She still requires physical therapy to strengthen muscles weakened by the chemo.
Daleny loves to dance and was taking hip hop dance lessons before she had to stop because of her illness. Even with all she is going through, Daleny is still all about helping others. She enjoys participating in community acts of kindness such as caring about the environment.
For now, like many teenagers, Daleny would love a day to go shopping at some of her favorite stores.
