“He drank eight bottles of water, a pint of milk, a half gallon of tea, and a liter of soda in one day”
Trevor’s whole family had come down with sinus infections. His mom took all three kids to the doctor where they were prescribed antibiotics and decongestants. Trevor’s illness wasn’t responding to the medications though, and his symptoms differed from those of his siblings. He was so thirsty that he drank eight bottles of water, a pint of milk, a half gallon of iced tea, and a liter of soda in one day. His family assumed that the drugs were simply drying him out, but a second trip to the pediatrician disproved that theory. Trevor’s blood sugar was tested, and the results were so high that they wouldn’t register on the machine’s scale. He had also lost 19 pounds since his last visit. His doctor diagnosed him with type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. The body breaks down the sugars and starches ingested into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body.
Trevor spent the next four days in the hospital on insulin shots as his glucose levels were regulated. Although he absolutely hates needles, Trevor is forced to prick his finger anywhere from eight to ten times a day to test his blood sugar levels. He also has to give himself insulin shots six to eight times a day in order to stay healthy. Left untreated, high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can become severe enough to lead to serious complications requiring emergency care, such as a diabetic coma. In the long term, persistent hyperglycemia can lead to complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
Trevor is a kind hearted and intelligent honors student who plans on pursuing a career in aerospace engineering. Despite his life-threatening illness, he is first in his class and dedicates his time to helping his peers. His passions include math and art. Trevor loves to draw and plays the saxophone.
