Belly Pain Turns out to be Wilms’ Tumor

“Doctors classified the tumor as stage III kidney cancer”

Jacob was in and out of the hospital with high fevers and dehydration. It wasn’t until the 5-year-old started complaining of belly pain that doctors found a huge mass in his stomach during an ultrasound. Jacob was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a rare kidney cancer primarily found in children. Symptoms include abdominal swelling, an abdominal mass, abdominal pain, and fever. Jacob’s doctors classified his case of kidney cancer as stage III, meaning the cancer had spread beyond the kidney area to nearby lymph nodes or other structures within the abdomen. This occurred when cells in Jacob’s kidney developed errors in their DNA. The errors allowed the cells to grow and divide uncontrollably and to go on living when other cells died. The accumulating cells formed a tumor.

Jacob’s treatment plan consisted of a radical nephrectomy surgery to remove his right kidney as well as a few adenoids, a biopsy of the liver, and a blood transfusion. This was followed by chemotherapy. Jacob’s remaining left kidney was forced to increase its capacity and take over the entire job of filtering his blood as well as removing excess fluids and waste products.

The consistent rounds of chemotherapy, a combination of powerful drugs used to kill cancer cells throughout the body, took a toll on 5-year-old Jacob. He became tired, sick, and lost his appetite. Now Jacob returns to the doctor once a month for a sedated check-up to monitor possible recurrence of the cancer. Currently, due to his poor immune system and his body’s inability to fight off infection, Jacob cannot attend school and spends most of his time at home.

Jacob is an outgoing child who loves superheroes. Batman, the Hulk, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are his favorite characters. He spends his free time watching ghost movies or playing video games. Jacob is also a huge fan of WWE.
