Jordan’s Adventures in Nashville

Jordan Kids Wish Network

“She was so grateful for the opportunity to explore all of the sights and sounds of the city”

Jordan was taking two to three hour naps every day after school in the seventh grade. Rapidly losing weight for two months and experiencing extreme thirst all of the time were symptoms that prompted Jordan’s parents to take her to the doctor. Diagnosed at age 12 with type 1 diabetes, it was two years later that Jordan had to be hospitalized for her illness. She had developed diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication where the body produces excess blood acids (ketones).

That hospital stay was the first of many as Jordan was in the hospital every three to four weeks after that for different problems regarding her condition. Jordan is specifically a very brittle type 1 diabetic, meaning that her blood glucose levels are dramatically uncontrolled. One day her blood sugar might skyrocket and the next it plummets. You never know from one day to the next what to expect. Jordan is on both fast acting and basal insulin. She checks her blood sugar ten times a day. With over 30 hospital visits over the past three years, ambulance rides, IVs, shots, and insulin drips have become Jordan’s reality.

Jordan’s blood sugar has dropped as low as 18, rendering her unresponsive and shot up as high as 600. She currently wears an insulin pump that gives her insulin every five minutes and a continuous glucose monitor that checks her blood sugar every five minutes. Always by her side is Jordan’s service dog, Mocha Mocha Latte. Jordan has missed a lot of school over the past three years due to her illness. She has had to forgo attending field trips, football games, and even her prom. Jordan loves cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers, playing piano, and listening to country music.

Jordan - Nashville 3For her wish of a lifetime, Kids Wish Network sent Jordan to Nashville, the city where country music was born. Having the ability to “immerse [herself] in all of the history of musical legends who have made a mark on this world gave [her] chills.” She was so grateful to spend a week exploring all of the sights and sounds that Nashville has to offer. The highlight of her trip was getting a VIP tour of the famous Grand Ole Opry with up and coming country music artist Noah Garner acting as her guide. She also spent time cruising down the Cumberland River in General Jackson’s Showboat. The Victorian era styled steamboat epitomizes the grace and grandeur of the old south, giving Jordan a taste of a time honored tradition. She boarded the Redneck Comedy Bus for an entertaining and enlightening afternoon of sightseeing as hosts Gil and Tater showed her all of the famous landmarks of Music City like the iconic Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame. The experience not only brought a smile to Jordan’s face but had her doubled over in laughter.

She enjoyed authentic southern cuisine at local BBQ hot spots like Back Alley Dinner and Rippy’s Bar & Grill. The servers went out of their way to make Jordan feel special, presenting her with goodies and decorating her table. “The reservation sign with my name on it brightened my day,” said Jordan. Rippy’s even gifted her with a keepsake sweatshirt that has quickly become a new favorite in her wardrobe. Everyone from the staff at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel where she stayed to the friendly folks at the restaurants where she ate played a role in making Jordan’s adventures in Nashville truly spectacular.

“Thank you, Kids Wish Network. It was the experience of a lifetime, and I will never forget it,” said Jordan.
