“The professional photographer, private fashion photo shoot, and special attention made her feel like a celebrity”
Flu-like symptoms landed Kyla in the hospital when she was one year old, but blood work revealed that influenza was not the cause of Kyla’s sickness. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when tests showed that her blood sugar level was over 1,000. This means that Kyla’s pancreas produces little to no insulin, and she must supplement this deficiency with injections. Kyla had to stay at the hospital for three weeks to get her condition under control. At age seven, doctors added Celiac disease, an intolerance to gluten, to Kyla’s chart, and when she got even older, they discovered she also had osteoporosis, a condition rarely found in children. Due to the osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle, Kyla had to quit activities she loved – like dance. Her body hurts and she experiences severe joint pain.
Fast-forward to now and Kyla must check her glucose levels four to five times a day. Because of her low weight, doctors have put her on estrogen to help her grow. Kyla has been hospitalized over 15 times throughout her life and has had diabetic ketoacidosis five times, a serious complication of diabetes involving the buildup of acids in the bloodstream. Left untreated, this condition can be fatal.
Kyla is a social butterfly who loves school and has a lot of friends. She enjoys rock music, collecting books, watching scary movies, and shopping. With the help of over 15 benevolent local stores in the Vancouver Mall, Kids Wish Network planned a fabulous shopping spree for Kyla.
Her glamorous day began with a limo escort to the mall courtesy of Lucky Limousine and Town Car Service where a professional photographer from Picture People was waiting to capture every moment of Kyla’s once in a lifetime experience. Earthbound Trading Company was her first stop. They opened an hour early for Kyla to have the store all to herself and greeted her with balloons, a spread of light refreshments, and a personalized welcome banner. Her spectacular shopping spree continued with visits to Hot Topic, Bath & Body Works, Claire’s, Charlotte Russe, and Macy’s to name a few. Each store showered Kyla in special attention and went out of its way to make her feel like a celebrity by offering her personal shoppers and gifts galore.
Her favorite store was Hot Topic because it perfectly suited her style. She said she could have spent hours browsing through their unique displays. After purchasing enough clothes, accessories, and shoes to make up a whole new wardrobe, Kyla tried on all of her ensembles in a private fashion photo shoot with Picture People. She loved modeling all of her outfits and posing for the camera. The star treatment continued with an exceptional dinner at Outback Steakhouse. Kyla had worked up quite an appetite after a full day of shopping and feasted on a big juicy steak to celebrate her wish.
