BEAVER DAM, Wis. (Sep. 28, 2015): Saturday, August 15, marked the eighth annual Melissa Mai Golf Scramble at the Beaver Dam Country Club in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The event was held by Jim and Julie Mai in loving memory of their daughter, Melissa. This year’s tournament raised over $5,000 with proceeds going to Kids Wish Network to sponsor the wish of Derek Morrissey, a local 12-year-old boy with epilepsy.
Derek was diagnosed in 2014 with epilepsy after studies showed he was having night seizures every five minutes. Although medications have slowed the seizures, Derek is scheduled to undergo a three phase brain surgery at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee to identify and eliminate the portion of his brain responsible for the seizures. After recovery from his surgeries, Derek will be granted a wish by Kids Wish Network.
Another Beaver Dam resident was granted a wish back in 2004 while she was battling Stage IV Astrocytoma – the most rapidly growing and devastating form of brain cancer. Her name was Melissa Mai, and Kids Wish Network engineered a family trip to Disney World for Melissa.
“It was the one bright spot that helped us out in a very dark time in our lives,” recalls Melissa’s father, Jim.
A year later, Melissa passed away as a result of her illness. Through their grief, the Mais remembered those happy memories they created together on their wish trip and resolved to pay it forward. In 2008, the first Melissa Mai Golf Scramble took place, and every year the earnings are donated to Kids Wish Network to make dreams come true for other sick children. Melissa’s wish trip “put a smile on her face,” says Jim, and now he wants to give others the same precious gift through Kids Wish Network’s programs. The tournament has raised over $33,000 for the charity for which Jim Mai has served on its board of directors since 2012.
“Kids Wish Network is so very grateful to Jim and Julie Mai for their dedication to our mission. Out of their own personal sorrow they have been able to bring joy to so many children,” said Anna Lanzatella, Executive Director of the children’s charity.
