A Curious Spirit’s Quest for Knowledge

“The wish has not hit me yet, it was just such a wonderful experience”

Angel was 15 years old when she began feeling tired all of the time, lost her appetite, developed sores in her mouth and noticed her hair was falling out. An allergist diagnosed Angel with Lupus Nephritis, which sent her down a long road of doctor visits and hospital stays. Lupus nephritis is an inflammation of the kidneys that is caused by systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). With this disease, the immune system targets its own body tissues. By the time Angel received treatment for SLE, her kidneys were already failing. She stayed in the hospital for two weeks as doctors tried to regulate Angel’s potassium level and blood pressure.

Once she was released, Angel’s outpatient treatment plan consisted of monthly chemotherapy and medication for her kidneys, joint pain and blood pressure. While her condition is under better control, she still experiences occasional flair ups and is currently managing her life-long illness at home in Baltimore while she studies computer science and experiments with cooking. Learning is her top priority as she is on a mission to make something of herself.

This inquisitive girl was thrilled with her Atlanta adventure because it quenched her thirst for knowledge. After checking into The Westin Peachtree Plaza, she and her family had dinner at Gunshow that was special not only because of its Brazillian and Chinese cuisine, but also because she got to visit and cook with the restaurant’s owner and Chef Kevin Gillespie. “He’s has inspired me to improve my cooking skills,” she said.

Her next morning was spent on the Peachtree Trolley where she got a 90-minute tour of Atlanta’s historical sites. Dinner at White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails was followed by An Evening with Neil Degrasse Tyson at Fox Theatre. The education enthusiast ended her trip with a return flight back home, something that was truly appreciated because this Wish trip was her first time on an airplane. “Getting to see the clouds from a new view has given me a new appreciation for the sky.”
