“Her wish was beyond her wildest dreams”
When Mia turned three years old, she came down with a fever. The fever was accompanied by severe abdominal pain. Mia was so ill her parents took her to the ER where she was admitted to the hospital. Blood work revealed a very high white blood count, indicating she was fighting off some kind of an infection. Days later, test results led to the discovery of the bacteria E-coli in her digestive tract.
Mia’s small body was fighting hard against the infection causing her kidneys to work overtime but it was too much, and her kidneys began shutting down. She was diagnosed with Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that results from the abnormal premature destruction of red blood cells. Once this process begins, the damaged red blood cells start to clog the filtering system in the kidneys. Mia was moved to the PICU for a month and received kidney dialysis for three weeks. The strain on her kidneys caused chronic kidney damage, and Mia’s kidneys now only function at 50 percent. The damage to her kidneys can be seen in the high level of protein in her urine. Mia needs to have her blood closely monitored and medications appropriately adjusted.
Mia loves to dress up in pink princess gowns and play pretend. Cinderella puzzles or games and Tinkerbell toys are her favorites. She started out her wish of a lifetime with a visit to Wet N’ Wild where she swam and played until her heart’s content. The little “fish” loves waterslides and rode as many as possible. After her fun-filled day at the water park, Mia and her family checked into the luxurious Sheraton Waikiki. Mia was expecting a party in her honor, but couldn’t have possibly imagined how extravagant it was going to be. Booked into the Sheraton’s presidential suite, Mia and her family were beyond amazed with their elaborate accommodations. “It was bigger than our whole house,” said Mia’s mom Sonja.
The sweet surprises kept coming when the Sheraton staff came in to set up Mia’s tea party. The hotel provided an exceptional spread of finger sandwiches, fruit, cupcakes, cookies, and punch. While the goodies were being delivered, Mia was dressing in her finest Cinderella ball gown courtesy of Kids Wish Network. She also donned a heart shaped necklace, opera length satin gloves, a bejeweled tiara, and a Kids Wish Network sash to complete her pageant princess ensemble. A red carpet was even brought in for her grand entrance. But what would a princess tea party be without a royal guest list? Storybook Entertainment sent over seven princesses to attend Mia’s party. She was in princess paradise as they each gave Mia their undivided attention. With the likenesses of Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Merida, Elsa, and Anna showering her with compliments, Mia felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Her special day could not have been more perfect. With extra trips planned to Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center, Buca di Beppo, and Chuck E. Cheese, Mia felt positively spoiled. “This wish was beyond our wildest dreams,” said Mia’s mom Sonja.
