“Words can’t express the way his eyes lit up during his trip”
Daejon, born prematurely, wasn’t breathing when he was born. In fact, he didn’t take his first breath for three whole minutes. Doctors also discovered that Daejon was suffering from a grade three brain hemorrhage; it took ten weeks in the NICU for the preemie to recover.
As a result of these traumatic health problems, Daejon was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a life-threatening condition caused by injury to the developing brain. He was also diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), a form of injury to the white matter of the brain. Daejon started physical and occupational therapies to treat his condition because cerebral palsy is a disorder of muscle and movement.
By age three, he needed surgery to loosen the muscles around eyes. Doctors performed another surgery when Daejon was seven years old to lengthen the muscles in his legs. He also received Botox injections in an attempt to relieve some of his body’s stiffness. Daejon continues with physical and occupational therapy treatments and has started speech therapy. He also needs daily medication for pain.
Despite his life-threatening condition, Daejon is a spirited and outgoing child. His favorite pastime is watching Sesame Street. With this information in mind, Kids Wish Network sent him to Sesame Street Live for a once in a lifetime experience to meet all of his favorite characters and watch a live performance of the show. The whole experience was incredibly special for Daejon. When the cast came to greet him, he was star struck. It was a dream come true to spend time with Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Cookie Monster, and Elmo. His favorite part was watching Elmo do the “Robot” dance.
In addition, Kids Wish Network arranged for Daejon to visit Hershey’s Chocolate World for a tour, a tasting experience, a chance to make his own candy bar, and solve a chocolate mystery. Daejon was treated to luxury accommodations at the Courtyard Harrisburg Hershey and to fabulous meals at The Mill in Hershey and Appalachian Brewing Co. during his stay. “Words can’t express the way my son’s eyes lit up during his trip,” said Daejon’s mom Lashon. “This was an opportunity for him to experience the joy and excitement that he so deserves.”
