MOBILE, Ala. (May 28, 2015): Growing up in Mobile, AL, 17-year-old Miguel Lumbreras always dreamed of visiting the Big Apple. And ever since his life-threatening condition prevented him from playing soccer, he added seeing an MLS game to that dream. Children’s charity Kids Wish Network was more than happy to recently combine those dreams into a grand wish for Miguel.

“Thank you so much for everything,” said Miguel’s mom Marcela Lumbreras. “Miguel is so happy; he’ll never forget his dream coming true.”

The first sign of a medical issue with Miguel appeared at birth. Born with both legs dislocated, Miguel was placed in braces that reached from his shoulders to his feet for eight months. After the braces, he seemed to develop much like a normal child until his 3-year-old check-up appointment led to a diagnosis of a life-threatening condition.

Miguel’s body appeared to be overly flexible, and it raised concerns for his doctors. A specialist ran tests and came back with a frightening diagnosis; Miguel suffered from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a complicated inherited disorder that affects the collagen and connective tissues of the body. The progressive disorder mainly affected his skin and joints at first, but he is now in almost constant pain.

Miguel’s skin has become extremely fragile and can break open into a wound with the slightest activity. There is no treatment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, so Miguel does his best to manage the symptoms and is extremely careful when doing any type of activity. Recently being prohibited from playing soccer, his favorite sport, was the hardest blow for Miguel.

In dealing with his life-threatening illness, Miguel has become more reserved but still dreams big. Kids Wish Network was beyond excited to grant Miguel’s wish and give him an experience he’d never forget.

Miguel and his family traveled to NYC where they stayed at the luxurious Roosevelt Hotel, dined at famous New York restaurants, and visited all the legendary sights. Miguel was treated to a VIP tour of the Statue of Liberty and received the star treatment at an NYC FC soccer game. As the guest of honor, Miguel was interviewed about his wish, welcomed to the stadium on the big screen, and got a personal soccer jersey for the players to sign.

“My favorite part was meeting the soccer players of NYC FC,” recalls Miguel. He even stated player Khiry Shelton was the “coolest guy ever.”
