ROCK FALLS, Ill. (Feb. 18, 2015): For 5-year-old Colton Egan of Rock Falls, IL, traveling with a dialysis machine has become part of life. But the most recent situation where it needed to be dragged along was one that delivered some of Colton’s happiest memories. Children’s charity Kids Wish Network granted Colton’s wish for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Disneyland in California.

“Colton’s smiles were just amazing,” recalls his mother, Sarah Egan. “We are so grateful for such a wonderful trip.”

Colton’s current situation doesn’t leave room for many smiles. He was recently declared in Stage IV Renal failure, thus the traveling dialysis machine. Colton’s dialysis is now up to 10 hours each day but his issues started just over a year ago.

In September 2013, Colton was diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition that clogs the filtering system in the kidneys. Soon, it began to affect his brain, and Colton was placed in a medically-induced coma. He needed surgery on his intestine during the coma and suffered a stroke when doctors initially tried to bring him out. After developing PRES, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, in his brain, Colton was officially brought out of his coma. The little boy, however, remained in his coma state for an additional 10 days.

Miraculously, Colton recovered after spending a total of 13 weeks in the ICU. He battled through months of physical and occupational therapies but was doing well with medication until recently. Now, Colton receives daily dialysis treatments and will hopefully be added to the transplant waiting list within the next month.

Despite these struggles, Colton is a feisty little boy who does his best to stay strong. He, like so many of the Wish Kids helped by Kids Wish Network, was especially deserving of a week filled with fun and smiles.

Kids Wish Network sent Colton and the Egan family on magical wish trip to Disneyland and Universal Studios to make his dream of meeting the “Cars” characters come true. The Egan’s enjoyed luxury accommodations, personalized dinner experiences, and lots of Disney characters.

“Colton had such a wonderful time,” adds Egan. “Thank you Kids Wish Network from the bottom of our hearts.”

Colton was just again released from the hospital after spending a week to adjust his kidney levels. The doctors upped his dialysis treatments from eight to 10 hours daily.
