“Miguel will never forget his dream coming true”
For the first eight months of Miguel’s life, he was in braces that reached from his shoulders to his feet. Miguel was born with both legs dislocated, but after the braces, he developed much like a normal child. It wasn’t until his 3-year-old check-up appointment that more concerns were raised.
His family noticed Miguel was overly flexible, and when they showed the doctor, the concern was immediate. A specialist ran tests, including a biopsy of Miguel’s skin, and came back with a frightening diagnosis; Miguel suffered from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a complicated inherited disorder that affects the collagen and connective tissues of the body. For Miguel, it mainly affected his skin and joints; he is also in almost constant pain.
Miguel’s skin is extremely fragile and can break open into a wound with the slightest activity. He has been hospitalized three times for wounds that developed severe infections. There is no treatment for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, so Miguel does his best to manage the constant pain and is extremely careful when doing any type of activity. Being prohibited from playing soccer, his favorite sport, was the hardest blow for Miguel.
Since the diagnosis, Miguel has become more reserved but still dreams big. One of his biggest dreams was to visit New York City and see all the famous sites. Kids Wish Network was beyond excited to grant Miguel’s wish and give him an experience he’d never forget.
Miguel and his family traveled to NYC where they stayed at the luxury Roosevelt Hotel, dined at famous New York restaurants, and took in all the legendary sights. Miguel was treated to a VIP tour of the Statue of Liberty and received the star treatment at an NYC FC soccer game. As the guest of honor, Miguel was interviewed about his wish, welcomed to the stadium on the big screen, and got a personal soccer jersey for the players to sign.
“My favorite part of meeting the soccer players of NYC FC,” recalls Miguel.
“Thank you so much for everything,” adds his mom. “Miguel is so happy; he’ll never forget his dream coming true.”
