“Maddy was a happy, happy kid”

Diagnosed at 2 years old, Wish Kid Maddy faces a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis which disturbs cell growth in the nervous systems and causes tumors to form on tissue. Her diagnosis revealed tumors all over her body, including behind both of her eyes; attempting to remove them could cause Maddy to become blind so they are monitored closely every three to six months. If the tumors appear to be growing, doctors have suggested chemotherapy to attempt to shrink their size.

Maddy was also diagnosed with a heart murmur and severe scoliosis. In June 2013, Maddy had two rods surgically placed to prevent her spine from curving even worse. She will need surgery every six months to lengthen the rods until she is 11 or 12 when she will be old enough for a permanent spinal fusion surgery. After each surgery, Maddy will need to wear a back brace for 23 hours every day for a week during recovery.

Maddy faces every doctor appointment, MRI, X-ray, and surgery with amazing strength and a positive attitude. The next four to five years are going to be very hard for 9-year-old Maddy, so Kids Wish Network couldn’t wait to grant her wish and give her some unforgettable memories to help her through.

Maddy and her family traveled to D.C. on an all-inclusive Wish trip where they enjoyed luxury accommodations, visited multiple museums and D.C. landmarks, dined at local eateries, and had a blast as a family. Maddy’s favorite part was visiting the International Spy Museum; she was also given a tour of the White House and stopped by the shop of the TLC show “D.C. Cupcakes”.

“Thank you so much Kids Wish Network,” writes Maddy’s mom. “She was a happy, happy kid.”
