SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Nov. 14, 2014): Together with Mercy Medical Center, children’s charity Kids Wish Network is excited to honor Sioux City 9-year-old Trista as a 2014 Hero of the Month. Trista was nominated for the award for her bravery during a recent stay at the Iowa facility.
“Trista has had a life of hospitals, and I don’t believe ever been selected to participate in something like this,” writes her mother Tiffany. “Thank you for making this possible.”
Kids Wish Network’s Hero of the Month program recognizes children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have faced and overcome difficult circumstances, often enduring a great deal of pain and suffering. While they may not suffer from a life-threatening illness, these Heroes have dealt with life-altering situations, demonstrating extreme bravery and courage.
Trista suffers from an immunodeficiency disorder called DiGeorge syndrome and has spent a lot of her childhood in hospitals. This disorder results in the poor development of several body systems. Trista recently spent another six days at Mercy Medical Center to treat a dangerous kidney infection.
“We’ve seen our daughter at her worst moments, and this stay was one of them,” adds Tiffany.
For four of the six days, Trista didn’t have the energy to talk, walk, play or visit with company. But despite her struggle, Trista remained positive and cooperative during the stay. The facility and staff were able to treat the infection, and Trista is doing well currently.
“As her parent, I was very excited to take her to the hospital for a picture and to receive an award for once, no tests involved and no illnesses,” Tiffany writes. “This gift means so much to us, thank you for such a wonderful idea and such a positive memory.”
Mercy Medical Center is one of hundreds of facilities across the United States that works with Kids Wish Network to honor brave kids. Each facility is able to nominate up to five Heroes per month, and each Hero is recognized with a Kids Wish Network certificate, t-shirt, and gift card. Kids Wish Network honored over 700 Heroes nationwide in 2012/13.
Kids Wish Network is a national charitable organization dedicated to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children having experience life-altering situations. More than just granting wishes, Kids Wish Network makes a difference through its various programs by delivering hope to kids across the United States.
