CINCINNATI, Ohio (December 2, 2014): When 4-year-old Nevaeh Kelly initially fell ill, neither her mother nor her doctors imagined that the medication being used to treat her would actually be the cause of another dangerous illness. Nevaeh was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome that lead to a complicated stay at Shriners Hospitals for Children®–Cincinnati, where she was recently honored as a Hero of the Month through Kids Wish Network.
The Hero of the Month program designed by the children’s charity recognizes kids between the ages of 3 and 18 who have faced and overcome difficult circumstances, often enduring a great deal of pain and suffering while demonstrating extreme bravery and courage. Nevaeh is very worthy of the title after her recent medical struggle.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome caused a rash that quickly developed into painful blisters and lesions, and resulted in her skin sloughing off. Nevaeh was in the hospital for weeks as the condition ran its course. The brave little girl received treatment for her complex skin condition, feeding through a tube, wound care and pain management. The lesions evolved to the point of covering 44 percent of Nevaeh’s body with wounds, including her mouth and eyes. The affected areas are still identifiable even a month later as the pigment is still returning to Nevaeh’s healed skin.
“The change to her appearance has been as hard for her as was the pain during her hospitalization,” recalls nominating Child Life Specialist Michelle Smith. “But somehow, she’s been able to smile through it all.”
Nevaeh’s bravery and resilience during this dangerous and painful situation made her a clear choice when nominating for the Kids Wish Network Hero of the Month program. And Nevaeh was excited to be honored.
“When Nevaeh received her Hero of the Month package, it just made her day,” says mother Sharon Graham. “She even wore her t-shirt to school. Thank you so much Kids Wish Network.”
Cincinnati Shriners Hospital is one of hundreds of facilities across the United States that works with Kids Wish Network to honor brave kids. Each facility is able to nominate up to five Heroes a month, and each Hero is recognized with a Kids Wish Network certificate, t-shirt, and gift card.
