Andre Makes Beautiful Music

“Music is definitely an escape for Andre”

Andre was diagnosed soon after birth with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease, a rare central nervous system disorder in which coordination, motor abilities and intellectual function are delayed. This condition mainly affects Andre’s muscles and motor skills. He suffers from severe scoliosis and muscle spasticity.

When Andre was 3 years old, doctors attempted a surgery on his hamstring tendons to help straighten his legs, but it didn’t help Andre’s condition. Then, in 2005, he received his first Baclofen pump which routinely delivers medication to help with his muscles. The pump must be replaced every 7 years. Andre had his next surgery when he was 15 to insert metal rods in his back.

Because of 18-year-old Andre’s progressive illness, his fine motor skills are affected and he requires total care. Andre is wheelchair-bound and requires help to do everyday tasks. There is no cure or standard course of treatment for his genetic disorder.

But despite these challenges, Andre remains a funny and artistic young man. Though his illness affects most of his body, he is able to utilize his hands to draw, play video games and write song lyrics. Music is definitely an escape for Andre, and he dreams of becoming a great songwriter one day.

Kids Wish Network was excited to grand Andre’s wish for a new laptop, complete with songwriting software, and an I-pod so he can listen to music anywhere. We know Andre will be making beautiful music!

KWN would like to thank Diversified Computer Resource, Inc. and Valenca Restaurant for helping make Andre’s wish extra special.
