Prepping Ryan for College: His Brand-New Laptop

My laptop will make the rest of my treatment a lot easier

In September 2013, Ryan stubbed his toe, a simple injury that wouldn’t heal. Doctors did an X-ray and found that he did, in fact, fracture his toe. When it didn’t get better, doctors conducted more tests and discovered all the bones in that toe had disintegrated, but it was the small mass revealed that concerned them more.

A biopsy confirmed the bad news; Ryan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of aggressive bone cancer. Tests were done to see if the cancer had spread, and thankfully, it hadn’t reach Ryan’s lymph nodes and lungs yet. The teen started chemotherapy immediately and had his toe amputated along with the tumor in August 2014.

Ryan has always been an ambitious young man, and his illness hasn’t changed that. He excels in school but is always willing to help kids who are struggling. Ryan has big plans for the future and won’t let his life-threatening disease get in the way. He can’t wait to go to college to study accounting and business, even though his cancer has delayed him a year.

With Ryan still receiving treatment, Kids Wish Network worked with his Child Life Specialist at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital to throw a Wish Reveal Party during one of his visits. Through the facility’s help, and contributions from Ryan’s wish sponsors, the teen was blown away by his surprise party where he received his state-of-the-art laptop.

“I didn’t have a clue what was going on,” Ryan said. “I’m excited for my laptop. It makes the rest of [my treatment] a lot easier because I’m gonna have a lot of stuff to do, and I can start getting ready for college and not really think about what’s going on at the time.”

The local media was there to capture Ryan’s excitement! Check out the links below to watch his wish reveal:

Ryan faces a few more months of chemotherapy treatment, but is looking forward to starting college in the fall.

Kids Wish Network would like to thank all of Ryan’s Guardian Angel wish sponsors that helped make his dream come true.
