PARADISE, Calif.: Four-year-old Jace Carmack is a joyful little boy who loves to go fast, especially when his older brothers push him around in his wheelchair. Unfortunately, the Paradise, C.A. boy has spent more time in the hospital than at home in the past year. His most recent trip away from home, however, was filled with joy instead of surgeries as he traveled to Disneyland on his wish trip granted by children’s charity Kids Wish Network.
Jace had his first brain shunt placed one week after his birth as a result of hydrocephalus, a life-threatening condition that causes water to build up on the brain. When he was 1, Jace was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy and six months after, his shunt failed, requiring four separate revision surgeries.
In April 2013, Jace’s shunt failed again, and he was airlifted to the hospital for an emergency shunt revision. Since then, Jace has been fighting an ongoing battle that includes nine shunt revision surgeries in only 10 months. As a result of his constant surgeries, Jace has developed severe epilepsy suffering from episodes that leave him unconscious.
Jace’s wish trip gave the Carmack family time together where the smiles were endless. Kids Wish Network sent Jace and his family on an all-expense paid wish trip to the California theme parks including Universal Studios and Cars Land at Disney California Adventure. Jace loved swimming in the pool at his wonderful hotel, the Hilton Anaheim, and visiting all the parks.
“Jace liked the fast rides the best; he would laugh and put his hands in the air,” describes mom Kris Carmack. “At the end of the day, we were all tired but Jace was still ready to go. He enjoyed everything so much. Thank you all, we had a wonderful time.”
On behalf of Jace and his family, Kids Wish Network would like to thank all the generous sponsors contributed to his wish: Hilton Anaheim, Compassion Partners Programs, Captain Kidd’s Restaurant, Universal Studios Hollywood, Tiffy’s Family Restaurant, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
Jace is currently doing well after his wish trip. His condition is monitored closely for any signs that his shunt might be failing again. Jace will celebrate his 5th birthday at the beginning of August.
