COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa: Evan Spizzirri of Council Bluffs, IA, couldn’t contain the shock and excitement on his face; he was meeting his favorite character of all time: Buzz Lightyear. The 4-year-old even got to dance with the “Toy Story” star all thanks to Kids Wish Network, a Florida-based children’s charity, when the organization granted Evan’s wish to visit Disney World.
When Evan was just over 2 years old, he started to show signs of extreme thirst and fatigue. His mother recognized these symptoms could possibly be related to diabetes, a disease she has been suffering with for decades, and she rushed him to the emergency room. A nurse tried 20 different times to place an IV in Evan’s tiny arm, but the vein was passed dehydration. Evan was soon transported to another hospital where he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Evan has been in and out of the hospital since his diagnosis. He is classified as a brittle diabetic where the life-threatening disease impacts his ability to carry out a normal life. At first, Evan received 4-5 insulin shots per day, but doctors quickly inserted a pump that delivers the life-saving medicine when his body needs it most. His family still has to keep a very close eye on Evan’s insulin levels as they can spike or drop rapidly without warning. To keep Evan healthy, he uses a diabetic alert dog named Chewy that can sense when Evan’s blood sugar levels change.
The battle against Evan’s diabetes is a daily struggle, but nothing could wipe the smile off his face during his wish trip granted by Kids Wish Network. The Spizzirri family traveled to Florida for Evan’s all-inclusive wish trip to Disney World and stayed at amazing accommodations provided by Calypso Cay Resort, dined at fabulous restaurants including Evan’s favorite, Buffalo Wild Wings, and experienced all the Disney Parks had to offer.
“I don’t think words could describe how grateful we are for Evan’s wish trip,” recalls mom Jeana. “He still hasn’t stopped talking about it.”
Kids Wish Network and the Spizzirri family would like to thank all the generous sponsors that helped grant Evan’s wish: Calypso Cay Resort, Compassion Partners Program, Pirates Dinner Theatre, WonderWorks, T-REX, A Prehistoric Family Adventure, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Thrifty/Dollar Rent A Car.
Evan is currently in good health and is working very hard to keep his blood sugar levels consistent. You can follow his story on his KWN page.
