Bounlod is a 10-year-old girl from the country of Laos. When she was only 13 days old living in Laos with, the protective mosquito net covering her crib caught fire from a candle, severely burning Bounlod in the process. Her parents sought medical attention multiple times for the treatment of the burns. At one point, the infection in her arms forced surgeons to amputate both below the elbow. Bounlod first visited Shriners- Cincinnati in 2008 when she was 5 years old, and has been continuing lengthy periods of treatment at the facility ever since. Bounlod just recently received bilateral prosthesis for her arms and is currently learning how to use them.
Bounlod will continue to need procedures and surgeries to help correct her skin’s condition, but she is extremely active and works hard at everything she does. Her dedication and strength make her a true HERO.
