Guest Blog: Wish kid Ashley Owen

Ashley was granted a wish to visit Hawaii in Sept. 2013. She suffers from Neonatal Onset Multisystem Inflammatory disease (NOMID). The disorder causes persistent inflammation and tissue damage primarily affecting the nervous system, skin, and joints, along with headaches, seizures and vomiting as a result of chronic meningitis. Ashley must take daily shots to prevent persistent rashes (common in NOMID sufferers) and has an enlarged liver and spleen.

Kids Wish Network granted me a wish back in September, and I just had to say thank-you for everything! My wish to Hawaii was amazing, and I had a blast! I loved visiting Pearl Harbor and the Iolani Palace, but the best part was that it really gave me a chance to forget about my illness and focus on fun rather than medicine. Of course, there were a few people who had something to say about my height, but it didn’t get to me because my Hawaii wish helped me escape reality for a week.

I’m currently getting ready to graduate high school and start at Tusculum College in the fall. My illness is getting slightly worse, and my doctors have increased my medication to two shots per night. But I’m so thankful for my wish being granted. It gave me more confidence and showed me that I don’t always have to think about my illness. Thanks Kids Wish Network!!
