Andrew’s gaming system upgrade

“Andrew’s whole wish experience was amazing”

As Andrew pulled up to his local Wal-Mart riding in a police Humvee, he didn’t expect to be greeted by a cheering crowd. Kids Wish Network was granting Andrew’s wish for a state-of-the-art gaming system, generously sponsored by the area Wal-Marts, with help of the Burton community.

Andrew has been suffering from severe Crohn’s disease since he was 11. He started experiencing painful abdominal symptoms, and after many doctors’ visits, he was finally diagnosed with the life-threatening illness. By the time of official diagnosis, Andrew weighed an emaciated 65 pounds and was hospital.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic and incurable disease that causes inflammation in the lining of the digestive tract and leads to severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, anemia and malnutrition. It was three years before Andrew’s doctors found a treatment that could offer Andrew relief from some symptoms.

Andrew receives a two-hour IV treatment of this medication every six to eight weeks but the treatments do affect his immune system which creates a vicious cycle. Because Andrew is homebound frequently, he is an expert at videogames and definitely will get a lot of use out of his new wish-granted upgrade.

The town rolled out the red carpet when helping grant Andrew’s wish. The teen was escorted in a police Humvee from his house to lunch and then to Wal-Mart where members of the community gathered to celebrate Andrew’s Kids Wish Network Wish Day, proclaimed by the Burton Mayor.

“We can’t thank you enough,” recalls Andrew’s mom, Terrie. “The whole experience was amazing. Words cannot express our gratitude to Kids Wish Network.”
