“Thank you for making my baby smile”
Amya was only 8 years old when her entire world changed. Her reality was ripped out from under her when the car she was riding in with her father and sister collided with another, resulting in a horrific accident. Amya was caught in a wreckage of broken glass, mangled metal, and clouds of smoke with her family, but while she and her father survived the crash, her sister was not so lucky. Severely injured, Amya was taken to South Carolina’s Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She sustained a broken leg, pelvis, and hand that needed stabilizing. Amya also suffered damage to her spleen that caused internal bleeding and required a blood transfusion. Even after countless procedures, Amya remained strong and brave. According to her nominating Child Life Specialist, Amya “handled her treatments like a pro.”
In addition to the physical pain of her injuries, Amya had to endure the devastating loss of her sister who she also considered her best friend. Amya pushed herself past her paralyzing grief, determined to work hard during physical therapy in order to be well enough to pay her respects at her beloved sister’s funeral service. Unfortunately Amya was still not medically stable enough to attend. She was positive that her parents would honor her sister by arranging a beautiful ceremony though. While Amya was focused on healing emotionally and physically, she was surprised by being recognized as a Hero of the Month. The award served as a reminder for Amya to have hope and keep fighting on her road to recovery.
“I just wanted to thank you whole heartedly for allowing my child, Amya, to be Hero of the Month,” said her mom, Ashley. “Since the accident that injured her and took her sister’s life, there has not been much happiness, but when she opened her Hero package, I saw pure joy and pride. Thank you for making my baby smile.”
It is with great pleasure that Kids Wish Network and Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital in South Carolina honor Amya as a Hero of the Month.
