HOLBROOK, New York – As a part of its commitment to infusing hope, creating happy memories, and improving the quality of life for children having experienced life-altering situations, Tampa-based Kids Wish Network sent 18 year-old Alyssa, who suffers from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, on an all expenses paid cruise. Kids Wish Network arranged for Alyssa and her family to take a Carnival cruise that departed from Cape Canaveral and traveled to the Bahamas. During the cruise, Alyssa and her family were treated to multiple complimentary adventures including private dance lessons, a day at the spa and a tour of the galley with the head chef of the cruise ship.
“Every day we are moved by the incredible stories of children worldwide who are dealing with life-threatening illnesses.” said Kids Wish Network Executive Director Anna Lanzatella. “There is nothing more satisfying than being able to put a smile on the face of a child who is struggling. We will continue to work with our partners to provide opportunities to put a smile on the face of a child through our wish granting programs.”
Alyssa, a bright young college student, was at home for a weekend with her parents when she noticed a strange lump on her neck. Her father immediately took her to the doctor, where tests revealed that she had Stage 2A Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes; she was started on aggressive chemotherapy within the week. Alyssa has since been in and out of the hospital for six cycles of chemotherapy and, because the treatment has weakened her immune system, she has recently spent an extra nine days in the hospital battling a serious virus. Alyssa has two more cycles of chemotherapy to go through before starting radiation therapy.
Kids Wish Network has been making dreams come true for hundreds of thousands of children all over the world for more than 15 years. Alyssa’s wish is one of several recent events that the charity has held.
“Alyssa smiled from ear to ear the entire time. Everyone treated us like gold, the trip was really awesome! I haven’t seen Alyssa this happy in such a long time, I can’t thank Kids Wish Network enough” said Alyssa’s father, Robert Korpi.
In Nassau, Alyssa really enjoyed swimming with the dolphins. “I couldn’t believe that I had my own dolphin to swim with as well as my own personal trainer. It was so magical! I also loved parasailing, it was awesome! I’m so grateful to everyone who made all of this possible.” added Alyssa.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for making Alyssa’s all- expenses- paid trip and wish so remarkable: Carnival Cruise Line, Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort & Restaurant and Park Avenue Limousine.
