Making a Difference Runs in the Family

We recently had the joy of having a new intern around the office. Her name is Alexis and she’s a senior at a local high school. She chose Kids Wish Network as the subject of her senior project on ‘wish fulfillment for terminally ill children’ after hearing the stories her mother told about granting wishes to children dealing with life-threatening illnesses. You see, Alexis’ mother, Sophia, was one of the first Wish Coordinators for Kids Wish Network.

Back when Kids Wish Network was first founded, Sophia helped our founder make dreams come true for kids all over the U.S. She helped arrange bedroom makeovers, shopping sprees, trips to Disney World and Disneyland, and even took Wish Kids to meet their favorite celebrities, including Elton John, WCW wrestler Sting, Tyra Banks, and Gloria Estefan.

The impression that the stories her mother told of the brave kids whose dreams she helped realize really stuck with Alexis as she was growing up. Now about to enter college, Alexis is also ready to make a difference with Kids Wish Network.

As an intern, Alexis was part of the whole process behind granting wishes and recognizing the bravery of our Hero of the Month nominees. She had a chance to try her hand at a little bit of everything, from putting together surprise gift boxes for wish kids, to packing Hero envelopes to be sent to hospitals. By the time she was finished with her internship, Alexis had more than enough to complete her senior project and tell her teacher and classmates about the absolute joy that a wish gives to children with illnesses and how that joy translates into raised hopes, brighter outlooks, and greater self esteem.

“It’s a very great pleasure to volunteer at Kids Wish Network,” said Alexis. “I had such a great time helping out, knowing that what I’m doing is going to help kids who don’t have a lot to smile about.  I love being a part of something like that.”
