When Corey was born, it was obvious that there was something wrong; his body was a reddish color, while his lips and around his ears was a purple-blue color. His doctor found that Corey had a heart murmur and referred him to a cardiologist, who did a catheterization on the baby’s few-days-old heart. It was also discovered that he only had one ventricle in his heart; he had his first open heart surgery at six months old. At five, Corey had his second open heart surgery. Not too long after the surgery, Corey developed a severe cough and was diagnosed with a rare condition called chronic plastic bronchitis. Because of the severity of his conditions, Corey has been in and out of the hospital for most of his life, he faces daily medications and breathing treatments, and will also require a heart transplant in the future.
While Kids Wish Network arranged the all-expenses-paid trip to D.C. for Corey and his family, the charity also reached out to Corey’s Congressman, Mike Rogers, to arrange a tour of the Capitol building and the White House gardens. Before Corey’s wish was granted, Congressman Rogers personally dropped by Corey’s school to wish him well on his trip.
While in D.C., Corey and his family were given a private tour of the Capitol building by Congressman Rogers’ staff, as well as private tours of the national monuments by the National Park Service and a garden tour of the White House. Corey’s favorite experiences were soaking in the history imparted to him by his ranger guide on the monument tour, and learning all about the Capitol building.
“It was the best time of my life,” said Corey of his wish. “I will definitely remember this for a very, very long time.”
“I can’t even touch on how wonderful it was,” said Corey’s mother, Susette. “It was just amazing. It all exceeded my expectations and it was so overwhelming. I can’t put into words how grateful we are for this wish.”
