Jacob is an amazing teen who loves to laugh. He’s a great wheelchair dancer and his favorite TV shows are “Good Luck Charlie” and “the Ellen Degeneres Show.” Jacob plays baseball for an assisted team and he loves to play on his iPad. He also enjoys exploring and looking at photos and pictures.
When Jacob was born, he was without oxygen for 5 minutes. Doctors resuscitated the tiny infant and told his mother that he might not make it. Amazingly, Jacob pulled through, but he has a condition called athetoid cerebral palsy. This occurs when there is damage done to the brain and it causes a lack of motor skills and can also cause random spastic movements. These movements then cause problems with other coordinated skills such as speaking, eating, talking or grasping with the hands. Because of his condition, Jacob cannot walk and must rely on a wheelchair for mobility. He also is unable to feed himself and is completely reliant on a feeding tube for nutrition. Jacob needs 24-hour care and has an aide at school and will need therapies (such as occupational, speech and physical) his entire life.
