The Incredible Story of Melissa Mai

Melissa Mai

In 2004, our Wish Department received an application for a girl named Melissa whose condition was rapidly deteriorating. In 2003, Melissa had been diagnosed with Stage IV Astrocytoma – the most rapidly growing and devastating form of brain cancer there is. Melissa underwent two surgeries to remove the tumor in her brain and was also aggressively treated with radiation and chemotherapy at the time.

Melissa’s wish was just to spend some time at Disney World with her family and our Wish Coordinators rushed to get her out there. In Orlando, Melissa and her family had a wonderful time enjoying the shows, riding rides, meeting their favorite characters and just enjoying some quality time together as a family. According to Melissa’s mother, Melissa’s favorite part of the wish was when she got the autograph of her all-time favorite Disney character, Eeyore, from “Winnie the Pooh.”

“I was truly touched by the wonderful generosity of the Kids Wish Network after Melissa was diagnosed with terminal cancer,” said Melissa’s mother. “It was a week of happiness in a very dark period of our lives.”

Melissa and Family at MGM Studios

Unfortunately, the following year, Melissa lost her battle with cancer and her devastated family clung to the bright memories they made during Melissa’s wish trip to Disney to give them comfort.

As the years passed, the thoughts of Melissa’s family kept returning to the amazing wish they shared with Melissa and the organization through which it had been granted. In 2008, Melissa’s parents decided to do something for Kids Wish Network and so they started the annual Melissa Mai Memorial Golf Scramble fundraiser in their hometown in Wisconsin. All the money that the event raised each year would be donated to Kids Wish Network in memory of their darling Melissa.

Each year, the event gets bigger and stronger, drawing in more people and helping spread the word about Melissa’s touching story and Kids Wish Network’s goal to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. This year was their most successful to date, raising $5,000 to help fulfill the dreams of the children who are currently waiting for their wishes to come true.

The Melissa Mai Memorial Golf Scramble is an outstanding effort on behalf of an unforgettable young lady for a very good cause. We at Kids Wish Network are proud to have helped grant Melissa’s wish and we are humbled and honored by her family’s continued support.
