Marisa is a very bright teen with an interest in science and a love of playing the piano and reading great sci-fi and fantasy book series such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. Marisa’s favorite band is Maroon 5 and her favorite sport is tennis. She also enjoys playing computer games such as Sims 3 and Starcraft 3.
Earlier this year, Marisa was diagnosed with having both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) as well as acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) – a very rare occurrence. She was immediately started on treatment, first for ALL and then for AML and, in October, Marisa endured a bone marrow transplant, knowing she must soon start chemotherapy treatments. With the combination of treatments, Marisa’s immune system has been compromised and she is currently in isolation in the hospital. With everything that’s happened to her, Marisa has been in the hospital since her diagnosis in June (with only a few days home) and will not be able to go home until, most likely, the end of January in 2012.
For her wish, Marisa wants to visit the set of the second Hunger Games movie, “Catching Fire.” Marisa feels a strong connection to the main character, Katniss, because of her bravery and strong nature. Make sure to pack a camera and your Hunger Games books, Marisa, because your wish is about to come true!
