At just 14 months old, Luke was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disease that causes ongoing muscle degeneration and weakening for which there is currently no cure. Because of this, Luke has never had the ability to walk and has been in a wheelchair since the age of 2. He uses an inhaler and percussion vest to maintain respiratory health and the severity of his condition requires the presence of specialized caregivers 24 hours a day. Despite this need, which may be seen by others as a disability, Luke is currently attending college on campus at Furman University and enjoying every second of it.
Luke wanted to meet NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams for his wish, and he could hardly believe it when he found himself in New York, touring the NBC Studios. When Brian Williams walked into the room, the two barely said ‘hello’ before they started talking about the ins and outs of becoming a television news anchor, which is Luke’s dream. Luke was smiling the whole time.
In addition to meeting his hero, Luke was also able to enjoy some unique experiences to New York, including a visit to the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 memorial, as well as watching “Mary Poppins” on Broadway and having dinner at The View at the top of Rockefeller Center. For Luke, his wish was truly memorable.
