When Malcolm was born, he was given only a 50% chance of surviving because he suffered from a heart condition called acute aortic stenosis. This occurs when the heart’s aortic valve is too narrow. Because of this, Malcolm has undergone two open heart surgeries to replace his aortic valve, the first of which occurred when he was only two and a half. His doctors will continue to have to replace his aortic valve every few years until his heart stops growing. Because of his condition, Malcolm’s whole right side is weak and his immune system is weak as well.
For his wish, Malcolm wanted to ride in ship, visit the Pittsburgh Zoo and go to Kennywood Park; he just got the chance to do all three. At the zoo, he woke up a sleeping bear with a loud roar and realized that he wanted a pet penguin. At Kennywood Park, he rode every ride he wanted to and more, but Malcolm’s favorite activity was riding on the “Good Ship Lollipop” and getting to blow the ship’s horn! What a wish!
