Noe is a 16-year-old Haitian earthquake survivor. He was trapped under the rubble of what was once a building he found safety and refuge in. The pain and trauma he endured as he was trapped under what was once a safe haven for him is enough to make most not want to continue. Noe is a fighter. He has a strong passion for life. He wants to return to what he once knew as his life. This is what keeps him fighting everyday. He understands once day at a time gets him closer to his goal of recovery.
His pelvis was completely crushed on that horrid day. He lost most of his teeth. These pains will heal over time. There is one pain from that day that will never heal; the loss of his 10-year-old brother. He has had a hard time getting through his grief. Having to deal with multiple orthopedic and dental surgeries has weakened him, but will never fully crush his spirit. He suffers from PTSD and depression. I have no doubt he will make a full recovery one day. My hope is little things along the way, like being named Hero of the Month, can make the transition a little more comfortable for him.
