ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fl. – A shopping spree wish is granted to a teen battling metastatic cancer.
Julio was diagnosed with retroperitoneal carcinoma in September of 2009. This is a very rare and aggressive cancer that causes tumors to grow in the chest and abdominal organs. Julio was treated for his cancer at the onset, but it has since metastasized. Julio is still undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments and doctors are trying to do all they can to stop the spread of the cancer.
A social worker referred Julio to national children’s charity Kids Wish Network, in hopes that he would have a wish granted. After filling out the application and being approved for a wish, Julio was soon telling his wish coordinator that he wanted a shopping spree at the Altamonte Mall.
Julio’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator got to work and arranged Julio’s shopping spree wish, complete with extra special surprises. On the morning of the trip, a driver from Park Avenue Limousine picked up Julio at his house and escorted him to the mall. When Julio arrived at the mall, there were various gift cards to different stores, movie passes and free popcorn from the AMC Movie Theater and even lunch at The Elephant Bar.
“I got clothes, an Xbox 360 with games, cologne and shoes,” Julio said. “I got everything I wanted and more.”
Aside from all the extras, Julio was made an honorary member of the Altamonte Police Department and was escorted around the mall by members of the police force.
“The cops were taking me all over the place and they were carrying my bags. That was my favorite part of the whole experience,” he said.
Julio said that all the employees at the mall were very nice and went out of their way for him on his special day.
“Everyone was so nice to me. They were giving me a personal shopper in each store. It was amazing,” he said.
Now that Julio’s wish has been granted, he is taking time to rest and enjoy his new clothes, shoes and electronics. Julio said it was a wish come true.
“It was amazing. I can’t even begin to describe what it was like,” he said.
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Julio’s wish extra special: Altamonte Police Department, American Legion Post 53, American Legion Post 183, Fraternal Order of Eagles #3496, Moose Family Center 1851, St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Parrish, Altamonte Mall, Park Avenue Limousine, COPS Center, AMC Movie, Champs Sports, Skechers, Abercrombie & Fitch, GameStop, Elephant Bar, and Dillard’s
