While most fourth grade students are making lists of all the things they want for Christmas, Kalliope and Katie have been busy raising funds to help grant a wish for one of our kids living with a life-threatening illness. Several months ago, I received a call from a very enthusiastic mom who wanted to know if it would be okay for her daughter and her daughter’s friend to do some fundraising for Kids Wish Network as part of a classroom project at the Sunset Hill Elementary School in Tarpon Springs, FL. The girls decided they would name their endeavor “K&K Giving from the Heart.”
You see, although this was a classroom project, it was a personal project for Kalliope. While searching for a subject to base the project on, Kalliope found Kids Wish Network’s website and was browsing the Waiting for Wishes page when she noticed that one of the Wish Kids, Rileigh, suffered from tetrology of fallot; this was the exact same heart condition that Kalliope’s father suffered from. Right then and there, Kalliope decided that she wanted to help Rileigh’s wish come true for her project and Katie was all for it.
Kalliope and Katie planned to set up a lemonade stand, have some bake sales and partner with some local restaurants for an evening in which the restaurants would donate a percentage of their sales for the evening. After two months of hard work and commitment, the girls raised $600!
Without a doubt, Kalliope and Katie, you are both true heroes!
