State: Marshfield, WI
Facility: St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital
The first day Clare came to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital (MSJCH) she could not speak or walk because her entire right side of her body was not functioning properly. Her condition was so critical that she needed to be transferred to MSJCH by helicopter. She was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where she had to endure many procedures and diagnostic testing to try to find out why she was unable to speak or use the right side of her body. Doctors ultimately discovered Clare had a blood clot in her brain that caused her to have a stroke. She was given many medications to help break up this clot and any others that may have developed. She had to also spend many weeks in rehabilitation therapy. Her intense therapy schedule included working with occupational, physical, and speech therapists. Music therapy and sessions with child life specialists also helped her in the recovery process. Clare worked very hard during her time at MSJCH and did everything her doctors and therapists suggested. She had a drive to get better like no other and her perseverance paid off in the end. Clare basically relearned how to walk, talk, and use her body like she did before she was admitted to the hospital. She got her smile and laugh back and her personality shined through. Because of the events Clare had to endure and her having the ability to keep a positive attitude through it all, we believe she is most deserving for this month’s Hero of the Month!
