Cara is a 17-year-old girl who suffers from MS (multiple sclerosis), a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. She was admitted to our hospital after being transferred from another hospital where she was a patient for 3 weeks. When Cara was first admitted to neurology rehab, she couldn’t hear or talk and her function level was that of a quadriplegic. After a few weeks in rehab, she became very ill and was transferred to the PICU where she stayed for a month before being transferred back to rehab to continue her therapy.
Throughout her stay, Cara has always been positive and has given it her best to get as healthy as she can. She has gone from fighting an infection where she was so sick she almost dies to coming back to rehab and making HUGE gains to where is now able to talk and is moving parts of her body she could not move when she first came to us. She will finally soon be discharged after spending 3 months with us but will continue with outpatient therapies. It is because of all that Cara has gone through and the courageous fight she has fought that we nominate her to be our Hero!
