When she was only 18-months-old, Janessa was diagnosed with having Myelodysplastic Syndrome, which is a disorder of the bone marrow stem cells that leads to a greater reduction in the number of blood cells and progressive bone marrow failure. Approximately one-third of the people who suffer from this syndrome will be diagnosed with having Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, or AML, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow; 15% of Janessa’s blood cells have been found to be cancerous while a diagnosis of AML requires 30% of the blood cells found to be cancerous. Since her diagnosis, Janessa has suffered through a bone marrow transplant and six treatments of chemotherapy to try and stop the spread of the cancerous cells in her blood and bone marrow. Janessa also endured a surgery to insert a port for her chemotherapy, but the first port failed and she had to undergo yet another port surgery. In addition, Janessa also has Down syndrome.
For her wish, Janessa indicated that she wanted to meet her favorite character, Tigger, and that’s just what she got to do when she visited Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Janessa had a blast with her family in Florida and she’s happy her wish was granted.
