Maurice is a helpful and kind 9-year-old boy. He goes out of his way to help others both at home and at school. He loves listening to music by his favorite rock band Nickelback and watching Sponge Bob Square Pants. He has a collection of bouncy balls and he likes to spend time reading. Maurice has a dog named Gus and his favorite color is blue.
When Maurice was born, doctors discovered he had a life-threatening condition known as Sickle Cell Anemia. Sickle Cell is a disease that attacks the body’s blood cells and causes severe and often debilitating pain. Maurice has been in and out of the hospital many times in his few short years, and just two years ago was intubated and in a coma for over two weeks. There are many risks to Sickle Cell including infection, blood clots, seizures, strokes, comas and eventual organ failure. Maurice is at an especially high risk of having a stroke as his body does not replenish the red blood cells and because of this he has had to have blood transfusions every two weeks for the past four months.
For his one wish, Maurice had a blast visiting the theme parks in Orlando, Florida. Not only did he have fun riding rides and seeing shows, but he also had a good time with his family!
