Austin is a typical 17 year old boy who loves video games, movies and hanging out with family and friends. He is all “teenager” but has had extended hospitalizations due to complications from Budd Chiari Syndrome. He has a blood clotting disease that affects hepatic veins. Austin has other blood clotting issues but they are unable to determine if one is causing the other/how these clotting issues are related. This causes fluids to accumulate in his abdomen. He usually has to come in weekly for ultrasound guided paracentesis drainage and medications in our outpatient clinic. He was very sad and angry in the beginning but began coping with each test and the diagnosis. Being able to deal with prolonged hospitalizations, lots of long days of treatments, surgeries, therapy sessions and being away from friends and family is a lot for any kid but he still manages to do it with a smile.
