Ashley is seen by a team of doctors to help her manage autoimmune hepatitis, an illness in which her immune cells are mistaking the normal liver cells as harmful and attack them, causing inflammation. She is seen by many different specialists who monitor her liver and the efficiency of the medications. Although she currently has cirrhosis, she is not listed for a transplant because the course of the medications is working well for her. She often feels sick with joint pain, nausea and low energy due to a lack of appetite but she does her best to succeed in school and has even inquired about volunteering at the hospital to help other patients.
Despite having a difficult illness and some issues at home, she comes to clinic with a smile on her face that always lights up the space and an infectious positive attitude. She is our Hero!
